CONCO Protection and Automation – the benchmark in engineering standards

Four focus areas

CONCO’s Protection & Automation Division, the supplier of control gear, protection and automation systems for our substations, has four focus areas: design, engineering, in-house manufacture and commissioning. To this end, we have an in-house design office with the latest design software, our own design engineers and documentation control processes, dedicated CONCO commissioning engineers and advanced test equipment for factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT).

Diverse products

Our products include protection schemes, metering systems, remote terminal units (RTUs), multiplexes, automation systems, telecommunications schemes, marshalling kiosks and distribution boards. For instance, our protection and automation systems, the very heart of the modern HV sub-station environment, ease the burden on electrical utilities by reducing unplanned outages, assist with fault-finding and decrease the need for maintenance.

At the pinnacle

Able to adapt to clients’ philosophies and specifications so as to best meet their needs, we regularly serve utilities and municipalities, mining houses and rail service providers. For instance, we have national contracts with Eskom Transmission, City of Cape Town and Nampower. The Eskom project includes the protection and control of Eskom buscoupler bays from 132kV to 765kV, while the Namibian project includes a three-year design, build and supply contract for full substation control, protection and automation schemes. This scheme includes a full IEC 61850 Protocol implementation.
