NR Substation and Karavia Extension  (Democratic Republic Congo)

22-07-2009

The project involved the design, supply, construction and commissioning of the new 220/120kV Substation in the DRC as well as the Extension to the Existing Karavia Substation. New 220/120 kV step down Substation for SNEL to strengthen the 120 kV supply network to new copper mines in and around Lubumbashi. The Substation design allows for 8 additional 120 kV feeders to be assigned to the mining customers base.

Upgrading, refurbishment and expansion of 88/11 kV Bredell Substation  (South Africa)

10-12-2009

• Bredell Substation was originally constructed about 40years ago, as a 88/11kV substation with a maximum capacity of 10MVA ( 2 x 5MVA trasf ). • Upgraded a few times along the way by various contractors and about 15years ago CONCO had its first taste of BREDELL- when we upgraded the substation after a fire had destroyed one of the transformers . CONCO supplied a completely new protection and control system as well as upgrading the substation to 20MVA by supplying and installing 2 x 10MVA transformers as well as various pieces of 88kV equipment. • Due to growth in the area and necessity to maintain 100% dual redundancy ,the substation had to be upgraded again to 60MVA Substation with facilities for a future 30MVA transformer bay giving total future power capacity of 90MVA which should suffice for the next 10-15 year’s growth. • The current project required that this substation be modified on the 88kV side from a 4 circuit substation to a 5 circuit substation by re-arranging the incomer circuits, adding a complete transformer bay as well an additional bus-section isolator to facilitate switching without affecting the consumers. On the 11kV side, the project required the complete removal of the existing 11kV switchboard as well as all the existing 88kV Protection, turning the existing 11kV switchroom into a new control room equipped with state of the art digital protection and the existing control room is now the battery room housing a full Dual DC system. To cap it all , all the existing 11kV circuits were relocated into the new 11kV switchboard ( supplied on another contract ) requiring all existing power cables to be re-routed to the new 11kV switchroom.
